Public Notice: Update on the Summer Playground Program
Date: June 2, 2026
Category: Community News / Public Notices
The Borough of Mercersburg wishes to provide residents with an official update regarding the status and future of the Summer Playground program.
At the March 9th Borough Council meeting, the Council voted to not move forward with the Summer Playground program for the 2026 season. This decision was reached after careful consideration of the challenges for the Borough to directly manage the program, particularly due to current staffing constraints and a demanding operations tempo.
We recognize that this program has a long history in our community and that this cancellation is disappointing to the families and children who look forward to it each year.
The Borough remains deeply committed to the youth of Mercersburg and recognizes the vital role that affordable, safe summer recreation plays for local families. To ensure the program has a path forward, the Borough Council voted at the May 11th meeting to hold all remaining program funds in a designated reserve until next year.
The explicit goal of reserving these funds is to transition the Summer Playground program into a sustainable, long-term model. The Borough is actively seeking an outside organization, non-profit, community group, or dedicated committee of individuals to take over the operational leadership and management of the program for the 2027 season and beyond.
By utilizing the preserved funding, a community partner would be able to restart the program under an independent organizational structure better suited for recreational programming.
